Walking for Connor 💙
Before Connor was diagnosed with Childhood Apraxia of Speech, I had never even heard of apraxia. Now it is something that touches our lives every day.
As Connor's mom, one of the hardest parts has been watching him know exactly what he wants to say but struggle to get the words out. I can see the frustration on his face when he can't tell us what he needs, and like any parent, I worry about how those challenges might affect him as he grows, starts school, and learns to navigate the world.
At the same time, I am so proud of how hard he works.
When Connor was younger, I wondered when I would hear him call me "Mama." Now, as he gets closer to turning 3, he proudly says "Ma-Ma." He can also say "Me-Maw" and "Pe-Paw" (though "Pe-Paw" still comes out sounding a little like "He-Haw" most of the time!). Every new word is a huge accomplishment and a reminder of how far he has come.
I work with his speech therapist at home every week, and I've learned that progress with apraxia often comes one small step at a time. Those small steps may not seem like much to others, but to our family, they mean everything.
This year I'm walking to help raise awareness and support for children with apraxia and the families who walk this road every day. If you are able, please consider supporting our team. No donation is too small, and every contribution helps support research, education, and resources for children like Connor.
Thank you for supporting our family and cheering Connor on as he continues to find his voice. 💙
