Why I walk for Apraxia Kids!
I walk to support Alex, as well as all children diagnosed with apraxia of speech - our Apraxia Stars. To show these children they are not alone and to acknowledge all the hard work they must do to overcome communication challenges that affect their day-to-day lives.
I walk to raise funds for the mission of Apraxia Kids – to strengthen the support systems in the lives of children with apraxia of speech by educating professionals and families; facilitating community engagement and outreach; and investing in the future through advocacy and research.

Reasons we walk: everyday interactions
Tuesday 25th Aug Alex is such a champ about working through his apraxia that it’s not always obvious from the outside how much work it is for him to communicate. I wanted to share what typical interactions look like for him.With familiar listeners, Alex is a chatterbox. This kid goes to bed saying “just one more thing…” then proceeds to tell me 5 more things lol. When we have communication breakdowns (often when he’s saying words I can’t anticipate) he uses all his tools - trying different phrases, using known words to provide context, or bringing objects to help clarify. It can take minutes of his persistence to help us understand - just to communicate basic things like how his day went. This is especially tough when he’s had a hard day or a really exciting day and isn’t able to share what happened.
It’s hard to imagine what it would be like to struggle to communicate every sentence. A specific shirt he’s looking for, what special activity they’re doing that day at school/daycare, which kids he played with, etc. As frustrating as that could be, he rarely gets upset about it and I think that’s pretty amazing :)
